South Austin is no more than a hop, skip and a jump from Downtown. There’s plenty to offer here, such as Lady Bird Lake, Zilker Park and Barton Springs.
And if you like the great outdoors, you have Garrison District Park, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Botanical Garden to explore. Think of it as a downtown oasis outside of Downtown.
If you’re into live music, there are many concert venues sprinkled throughout South Austin. And if you want to learn about the city’s eclectic past as part of the counterculture and what makes Austin weird, then visit the South Austin Popular Culture Center (aka SouthPop).
If you have kids and are looking for schools, South Austin also features some fantastic schools as part of the Austin Independent School District (ISD). Many South Austin schools have been rated Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency, while the district overall has been Academically Acceptable. Many South Austin students attend Travis High School, which is affiliated with the Texas Education Agency’s Mentor Program. The school provides a number of career-oriented classes, including video game design, culinary arts, and nutrition, among others. Barton Hills Elementary School, Dawson Elementary School, Bailey Middle School and Covington Middle School, are also highly rated.
South Austin is located within Lady Bird Lake to the north, I-35 to the east, State Highway 45 to the south, and Route 290 to the west.
Explore such neighborhoods as Barton Hills, Maple Run, Zilker, South Congress (SoCo), Travis Heights, Bouldin Creek, South Lamar, Westgate, South Manchaca, Garrison Park, St. Edwards, West Congress, Cherry Creek and Shady Hollow, to name a few.
Visit one of the areas many food trucks, listen to some live music and take a walk through South Austin’s many parks. You’ll find it be a very hip and fun place to live.
